Matilda The Musical and Cabaret Festival make exciting combo

Co-Artistic Directors Eddie Perfect and Ali McGregor announced on stage last during The Last Galah that next year’s Festival will be bigger than ever before as Matilda The Musical will run before, during and after the 2017 Adelaide Cabaret Festival opening on May 20 in the Festival Theatre.   Adelaide Festival Centre CEO & Artistic Director, Douglas Gautier says: “Adelaide audiences have been well served with musicals throughout 2016 from Ghost The Musical, Cats, Sound of Music and finishing off the year with We Will Rock You in December “ It widely demonstrates the Adelaide audiences appetite for high quality musical theatre productions and Adelaide Festival Centre can’t wait to roll out the welcome mat for the Producers of Matilda The Musical in May next year”. 2016 Helpmann Award Nominations   topped off the week as the news that the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Australian Production of Matilda The Musical  received a record thirteen nominations including one for Tim Minchin for Best Original Score and is up against Adelaide Cabaret Festival’s very own Co-Artistic Director Eddie Perfect also nominated in the same category. Cabaret Festival Co-Artistic Director Eddie Perfect says: “Timothy Minchin is one of Australia's smartest cultural pot stirrers. Always a wizard with words, the combination of his music and lyrics, Dennis Kelly's remarkable book, and the timeless genius of Roald Dahl,   has made "Matilda" one of the cleverest, most creative and heartwarming musicals of all time. It's only just and fair that every Australian has the opportunity to fall in love with this musical, and I'm so excited that Adelaide audiences will get to experience the magic of Matilda first hand.  “ Cabaret Festival Co-Artistic Director Ali McGregor says: “We were living around the corner from Tim and his family when he was writing Matilda. We were both in London and on the back of his extraordinary success at Edinburgh Fringe he had taken the UK by storm and been given this golden opportunity. When I finally got to see Matilda in Sydney last year it was one of my most emotional and exhilarating theatrical experiences. Not just because a friend had done good but because a good person, one of our own had created what I think is one of the greatest modern musicals. I'm so excited that we will get to share this show with our Adelaide audience in the beautiful festival theatre. Maggots!!” Matilda The Musical is based on the beloved novel by best-selling author Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox).
