Director: Seth Gordon Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Kelly Rohrbach, Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario, Jon Bass (II) Plot: Baywatch follows devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson) as he butts heads with brash new recruit Matt Brody (Zac Efron). Together they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay. Verdict: Sun, sand, surf, chiselled abs and plenty of self- deprecating fun – there’s a lot to like in the new Baywatch movie. There is little that this movie does not poke fun at and Efron’s disgraced former US Olympic swimming character takes the brunt of the shtick. The relationship between Johnson and Efron’s characters is at the heart of the fun as are the men’s rock hard bodies. The ladies in the film look fantastic in the classic red swimwear, however they are portrayed as more athletic and in charge. Rounding out the cast is Jon Bass as the chubby new lifeguard recruit who has a major crush on C.J. (Rohrbach), while Priyanka Chopra plays a tough property developer. The movie provides laugh after laugh with plenty of tongue- in-cheek jibes and a lot of action with a touch of mystery. Head lifeguard Mitch Buchanan (Johnson) takes his job extremely seriously and there is no boundary he won’t overstep when it comes to the safety and well-being of his beloved Bay. Buchanan leads his team into investigating a suspected drug-running operation who want to control the Bay. Efron and Johnson make a great odd couple comedy duo and the pair steal the show. Johnson’s screen presence and charisma are undeniable. Baywatch is over-the-top fun and it’s a very funny guilty pleasure. (Films are rated out of 5 stars)
