Carlotta: Queen of the Cross

Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent

Review by Honey B

Carlotta is still every inch a glamorous showgirl. At 73 years of age, the living legend is brutally honest, self-deprecating and she has a strong voice. Carlotta was born a boy in the working class Sydney suburb of Balmain. She underwent a sex change in her early 20s and starred in the Kings Cross cabaret show, Les Girls. Accompanied on piano by Adelaide’s own Michael Griffiths, Carlotta wowed the audience with stage presence, quick banter and impressive style. The born performer sang some classic tunes including the poignant As Time Goes By, My Way and I’m Still Here. Griffiths and Carlotta also paid a beautiful tribute to one of her best friends, Peter Allen. In-between the musical numbers, Carlotta got up-close with the audience – some were a little afraid, others intrigued and many were fans of the Queen wanting a chat and complete with feather boas. The feisty performer told many hilarious, insightful stories, stirred up a bit of politics and was well complimented by Griffiths throughout the show. This iconic diva is standing tall on-stage – exactly where she should be. All hail Queen Caroltta.
