Elaine Crombie: Janet’s Vagrant Love

Adelaide Festival Centre, The Famous Spiegeltent, June 21 to 22

Review by Honey B

Elaine Crombie has made her cabaret debut in her one-woman show, Janet’s Vagrant Love. The strong Pitjantjatjara, Warrigmai, German and South Sea Islander performer from Port Pirie shared her personal truth in an emotive show. Crombie told the stories of her first loves and the first time someone close to her died. She was backed by a small band and a faceless “friend’’ called Feirg sat on-stage with her as her story came to life. Crombie wowed audience members with her powerful voice as her songs detailed the struggles of dealing with grief and loss. Her songs in the original score were certainly her weapon and there were certainly a few laughs thrown in as well. At times throughout the performance you could hear a pin drop as the audience was fixated on the multi-talented artist. With a career spanning more than 20 years across many artistic disciplines it was wonderful to hear Crombie’s unique voice in a brutally honest show.
