Watching Paul McDermott and Steven Gates was like being in the ultimate musical/comedy masterclass. The friendship between two of Australia’s best-known singer/songwriters and comedians was obvious to see as the pair bantered and sang original, pretty and completely tongue-in-cheek songs. McDermott (Doug Anthony All Stars) and Gates (Tripod) have been friends for almost 20 years and McDermott quipped that the duo was “going solo, together’’. McDermott may have had a wealth of health issues and he’s sporting a bushy beard and much longer hair these days, but his voice was absolutely superb, and his wit was still razor sharp. Gates harmonised beautifully with McDermott and added his skilful guitar prowess to the Fringe gig. His laidback approach was the perfect foil to McDermott’s sass. A teen in the front row was an easy target for McDermott’s humour. Standout original songs included McDermott’s Marvellous Mr Me which was an ode to McDermott himself, Stone Crows was a truly heartfelt tribute to a mutual friend and the song about Apple founder Steve Jobs was a fun audience sing along. Audiences need to rush and get a ticket to this show. Yes, McDermott is marvellous and together with Gates the pair are unmissable.
