Stephen K Amos: The Story So Far

Adelaide Fringe, Arts Theatre, until March 17

Review by Hivemaster

A Stephen K Amos gig is always a must-see show at the Adelaide Fringe. This year, the popular comedian is hitting audiences with his story, which has seen Amos touring for more than a decade. Amos is well-know for his easy-going, sharp comedic style, but he always sends a shiver of fear through audience members when he pulls the lights up to see his crowd and converse. He works the room like the professional he is, and the Saturday night audience was no different, with two young 20- somethings caught in his glare. Amos is a compelling storyteller and his humour is always intelligent and thought-provoking and tonight was no different. He tackled the subjects of Hollywood’s first black superhero, politics and racism all with his quick witty banter. There were new stories and old stories and the sold-out crowd loved every single one. He couldn’t resist taking pot shots closer to home, with Adelaideans firmly in his sights from bogans to the hot weather and those lime green scooters that are everywhere. There was plenty to reminisce about as Amos spoke of his upbringing in a large family as one of seven kids and the recent losses of two beloved members of his family. Don’t miss Stephen K Amos and support his fundraising for the Mary Potter Foundation in memory of his mother and twin sister.
